Interviews      Wunderkammer - via mail 11.02.2003

Alright! Let me at first welcome you here for this small Interview! Thank you very much for the time you are taking for that interview!

When I first started to listen to your album I was really surprised but in a very positive way of course. As long as we are a Heavy Metal Magazin the music I become to listen to is very different from Wunderkammer. So how do you think about the fact that a Metalzine shows interest on your album?

Pål:
I like the thought very much. It illustrates what I´ve always sought after - a bridge between genres.

Wunderkammer - chamber of Wonders in English! As Wunderkammer is a word we also use in Germany, tell me do you have the same word with the same meaning in the Norwegian language and how did you come on that name for the band?

Pål:
'Wunderkammer' is of course a very acurate German word for a 'Raritäts Cabinet'. There are no similar expression in English or Norwegian as I know.

How would you characterize the type of music you are playing?

Pål:
The music of Wunderkammer has a punkish attitude that mixes the Anglo-American rock and pop-styles with European genres like Klezmer, Gypsy and so on.

I read that you said in another interview that the music you are playing originated from Punk music. What would you say is the connection between your music and Punk music than?

Pål:
The attitude in our music is 'punkish' in that one can play and sing whatever one likes. The first album has more of those elements, however, a more raw energy. It´s a mixture of musicians in the band, stemming from various music scenes. Only I come from the punk and post-punk scene of the Eighties.

If I would compare your music with this of Tom Waits and Nick Cave especially if I look on the feelings your music is creating, what would you say to this comparison?

Pål:
I think that is good comparison and fairly obvious. I have listen more to Tom Waits than Nick Cave.

I also read that a good characterisation of you songs would be to entitle them as amorous drinking songs. A strange characterisation or a good one?

Pål:
I think you are right. Some of them definately are.

Tell me from which part in Norway are you and what would I really have to visit there area when I would go there on holiday?

Pål:
We come from Haugesund and Stavanger on the South-west coast of Norway. The long sandy beaches just south of Stavanger are beatiful and great for surfing.

Because of the fact that there is not very much information about Wunderkammer to find in the whole net I would beg you to tell me some words about the bands history, the intentions behind the band and about the current line up!

Pål:
I started Wunderkammer about eight years or so ago. The idea was to clash and fuse genres from Europe and asia with the more traditonal Anglo-American rock scene genres. I had to broaden my mind. I stayed in a whole summer composing music and then started gathering the strangest band I could think of. The original lie up was Gjertrus Økland the gypsy violinist, Per Zanussi, the Double bass player, Børge Fjordheim, rock'n roll drummer, Johan Egdetveit Contemporary Accordionist. Later my brother Morten Jackman joined on saw and additional punk drumming and Roald Gilje played the tuba. We released two 7 inch Ep's on vinyl. For the first album Per Zanussi moved on to playing the saw and power bassplayer Øyvind Storesund joined on double bass and beatiful contemporary Celloplayer Tanja Orning. For the second album Paal Nilssen Love also bangs the drums together with Børge Fjordheim. Together they create a fine chaos.
We also released an Ep last fall with some arabian influenced songs. Wunderkammer has also put music to films. Among others we did the music for a documentary on lobotomy, which lead to the victims of lobotomy in Norway was excused. We have also participated with songs for several feature films in Norway. We have a reputation for having highly energetic and dynamic live performances. Once we played in Berlin at the Berlinale of 2001.
The current line up is Børge Fjordheim(drums), Johan Egdetveit(Accordion), Tanja Orning(Cello), Øyvind Storesund(Double bass) and myself on song, guitar and stunt trumpet.

So far so good! Let me tell you: mange tak for eur tid og ha de bra! Thank you very much for your time and take care!
